What types of water leak prevention systems are available?

water leak detection system types thumbnail

Today, many water leak prevention systems are available on the market, making it hard to know where to start. Brands highlight different features that can be difficult to compare.

To make an informed decision, first identify what you expect from such a system. Once you have a clear understanding of what each system type offers, you’ll be able to determine which one best fits your needs.

Water leak prevention systems generally fall into four categories. Communication protocols, which allow the system’s various components to communicate with one another, are at the core of what differentiates them.

Systems with detectors but no automatic shut-off valve

Commonly found in big-box stores, these systems detect the unexpected presence of water through sensors and trigger an audible alarm or send a notification through an app. However, they do not shut off the water supply. As long as it isn’t manually shut off, water will continue to flow. If you are away or react too late, the leak can cause significant damage.

As you’ve probably figured out, this type of system is more of an alert mechanism than a true protection system. Its cost is lower… as is its usefulness.

The function of Wi-Fi: sending alerts

In a leak detection system without an automatic shut-off valve, Wi-Fi is mainly used to transmit remote alerts between the detectors and the app. Alerts are triggered once water damage is already occurring, but since the system cannot shut off the water on its own, the leak continues until you take action.

Systems with detectors and an automatic shut-off valve

Most professional systems on the market fall into this category; they are active protection devices. When they detect water or a leak, they shut off the water supply to prevent or limit damage. Typically, the automatic shut-off valve is installed on the main water line. It provides 24/7 protection, preventing damage even when you’re away.

Wi-Fi as the communication link

These systems communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth or radio frequencies to establish the link between the sensors and the automatic shut-off valve. Bluetooth enables short-range connection between nearby devices, while Wi-Fi is used for communications from the valve to the outside. Wi-Fi plays a central role in this type of system:

  • Internet connectivity
  • Real-time notifications
  • Remote control
  • Smart home integration

Systems with detectors, automatic valve, and gateway control panel

This type of system is a centralized solution designed to monitor, detect, and respond automatically in case of a water leak. When water is detected, a signal sent to the control panel triggers the automatic shut-off valve. The control panel serves as a communication gateway between the sensors, the valve, and the app.

The app, at the heart of the system

System components communicate via Wi-Fi.  However, the control panel usually allows only limited on-site management. In most cases, it is used only to silence the audible alert and does not identify the location of the incident. An app is essential for managing the system and performing a full reset after a detection event.

Systems with detectors, automatic valve, and smart control panel

This type of system offers the most comprehensive water damage prevention. All communications go through the smart control panel, which acts as the central hub. The panel serves as a gateway for communications between components and the app, but it also allows full system management directly from the panel itself, without using the app. NOWA offers the only systems designed in Canada to feature such a smart control panel.

Superior reliability and security

In the case of the NOWA 4S system, communication between sensors and the control panel is carried out via radio frequencies. Unlike some competitors, the panel sends commands to the valve through a wired connection, enhancing security and eliminating the risk of interrupted communication. Finally, outbound communications to the management portal and mobile app can use either Wi-Fi or the LTE network, the latter providing particularly fast and reliable connectivity.

NOWA stands apart in terms of usability, speed, reliability, and quality. Our systems come with many advantages, including a built-in screen on the smart control panel. Learn more about this feature in this article.
